Five Star Review for CHANGE OF ADDRESS from Night Owl Reviews

After the recent death of beloved friend Morgan Parnell, Josselyn Adler receives news that she has just inherited his home in the picturesque town of Unity. But trouble ensues almost immediately when Morgan’s son Ben turns up and announces he is the new owner of the house—and he has a will to prove it—but so does Josselyn. So who has the legitimate will?

Josselyn has had a rough life, but she has persevered to become a home care nurse. She now longs for a family to call her own. Ben has had a charmed upbringing and has gone on to become a successful hematologist. But a brutal accusation brought against him not only nearly cost him his reputation and medical license, but completely broke his spirit as well.

Both Josselyn and Ben are suspicious of each other’s motives, but as they spend time together, they realize that maybe they can let go of all their mistrust and love each other.

I loved Change of Address. The emotional impact of this story is right in your face. There’s no sugar coating of the character’s pasts or foibles, and this makes them real and relatable. If you’ve read Natalie-Nicole Bates’ Back To You, you’ll recognize the splendid little town of Unity, as well as a few recurring characters. I also loved the ending and the truth behind the wills. The angle with the wills is something I’ve never seen before. Change of Address is a definite keeper and an easy 5 stars.

Since she was a little girl, Charlotte Anders knew she was special—she just didn’t know why. It’s 1896 as the story opens, and all Charlotte wants is to become a funeral director like her father. A tragic fire at a lumber mill changes Charlotte’s life forever, and that of a young man who has perished in the fire.

Flash forward to the present day and we find Carly (formerly Charlotte) still very much alive and still mourning the death decades earlier of her beloved husband Jamie. Carly has lost contact with her only other eternal friend, Xander, and now she’s hearing voices in her head.
Carly accepts an invitation from an online friend to help him appraise his collection of Victorian photographs in hopes that the persistent suitor in her head will sense a male presence and leave her in peace.

Little does Carly know that Daniel Tremont is someone special, too. Not only is he eternal like she is, but he’s the young man from the lumber mill fire all those years earlier. Daniel has been searching for Carly for over one hundred years, and now that he has found her, he has no intentions of letting her go. But can he make her see who he really is?

SEE ME is a cleverly written paranormal romance novella flavored with a bit of horror. We meet Carly and Daniel, who are both eternal and searching for the missing pieces in their life. The reader is not bogged down with tons of fancifully written backstory, but introduced via a love story to two people who through no real fault of their own cannot die and are just struggling to get along with a never ending future. Emotionally driven, we feel their pain, we see their struggle, we elate in their happiness. The beauty of this story is its simplicity. When simple is done right it is beautiful, and SEE ME is beautiful. The quintessential paranormal romance.

BACK TO YOU is actually the first novel in Natalie-Nicole Bates’ Unity based stories (Change of Address was released first for some reason). BACK TO YOU is a remarkable little gem that will resonate strongly with second wives or for those girls getting back into the dating game after the demise of a long term relationship. Personally, I loved it. Ms. Bates has a way of weaving a story that will simply punch with emotion. I especially loved the delightful secondary character Caleb Smith. I’m certainly hoping there will be a third Unity story, but until then, I highly recommend BACK TO YOU.

Lynsey Reznor is successful in every aspect of her life but one: Her love life.

After yet another failed relationship, this time with a rock star who failed to mention he was still married, Lynsey makes an impulsive decision to return to her home town of Unity to be near her old friends. But moving home brings about one very large complication: Her best friend’s brother Nick Lincoln, who Lynsey has loved since she was a teenager.

Although Nick once cared very much for Lynsey, he decided to marry another, hurting Lynsey deeply. Now a widower, Nick realizes that there is still a chance to reclaim Lynsey’s love, but at the price of coming clean from the past, something he’s not so sure he wants to do.

Third generation funeral director Lizzie Morton has just purchased the long abandoned Nichols Funeral Home.  Soon after moving in to the upstairs flat, a late night knock at the door signals the arrival of a man claiming to be Adam Nichols, the former owner of the funeral home. The trouble is Adam Nichols owned the funeral home over one hundred years earlier.

At first, Lizzie doesn’t believe him, but soon she begins to wonder if he really is who he claims to be, and if he is, just what she has allowed to pass into her home.

Antique Charming is a gothic-style short story that will have you wishing for a full-length novel. Adam Nichols is a refreshing change from the garden variety vamps, shifters, and zombies that have flooded the market. At the end of the story, you will have more questions than answers, especially what exactly is Adam Nichols, and where has he been the last one hundred years or so. I found this story absolutely fascinating. I will be the first in line to petition Ms. Bates publisher to demand a full length novel!

BACK TO YOU is a sweet contemporary romance that solidifies the fact that true love never dies.

Lynsey left the town of Unity with a broken heart after her first love, Nick, married someone else. Now, she's back and a huge success, but seeing Nick again brings back old feelings. Neither one of them has ever stopped loving each other but it's uncertain if they can put the past behind them in order to have a future.

This is a really delightful novella. I really love the old lovers reuniting trope. I thought the author did a great job with creating the back story and relationship between Nick and Lynsey in a short amount of writing. That lent more to the credibility of the relationship since they got together in a short amount of time.

Nick and Lynsey's relationship was a source of frustration though. It was obvious right from the beginning that they were perfect for each other, but I found that the lack of communication between them made me want to bang my head up against the wall a couple of times in the story.

Overall though, I thought it was sweet and romantic and just a pleasant way to spend a snowing morning in February. BACK TO YOU is the first book I've read by Natalie-Nicole Bates, but I look forward to reading more of her work.

Lizzie Morton has just bought the Nichols Funeral Home. The house is everything she's dreamed of. She plans to restore it to its former glory, intent on showing her family that she can truly make it on her own.

When a visitor shows up on her doorstep one night, Lizzie wonders if he's made a mistake. Yet she cannot deny that the man seems familiar even though she's never met him till now. Taken aback by the fact that the man reveals his name to be that of Adam Nichols, Lizzie briefly wonders if she's lost her mind. There's no way he could be the same person who once owned the funeral parlor. At least that's what she keeps telling herself.

Her suspicion builds when Adam claims she's to be his assistant and that he also intends to restore the funeral home with her help. Lizzie balks and tells him repeatedly that he's mistaken and she's not his assistant. She bought the house fair and square and she intends to keep it.

A phone call to the realtor reveals that the person she negotiated with in order to buy the house has never worked there. Even more surprising is the fact that the house was never up for sale. As Lizzie struggles to understand what is going on, she refuses to give up what is now hers. Even if that means she must surrender herself  to the entity that now lives within her home.

While this story was quite short, it was still a great read. I felt it was an introduction, of sorts, for a novel. It definitely has potential, that's for sure.  A truly delightful read!

Awesomeness! This was a super great short story! I'm letting you know NOW that this is a short story...just a few pages (only 5!), but its packed so full of the paranormal, romance, mysteriousness and fantastic writing. Natalie-Nicole Bates is a fantastically talented author and I hope there is more to come from her! This is a great 4-Book worthy short story to read while you're trying to decide what's next on the reading list. GREAT job, Ms. Bates!

Review: The Ramblings of Amy

It all starts with a knock at Lizzie's door at 3am and continues with her allowing a stranger into her home. As he makes his way upstairs, all the while claiming that Lizzie's house was his house and she was his assistant, she allows him to bathe and use her guest room.

In this debut short story, it's a breath of gothic horror fresh air. It was very fast paced, and even more original with its twists. I really liked Lizzie's character, she felt very real and easy to relate to. Adam starts out as a mystery, but one that I really like solving. I wish this had been a little longer, because the end had me wanting to read more and I can't wait for the next one! All in all, I definitely recommend this one for a read or two!

Review: Pearls Cast Before A McPig

Bates manages to set up and deliver a mysterious and intriguing story in just seven pages. I liked how she leaves things open for interpretation without giving the story an unfinished feeling. The writing is pleasant. The characters could have been more fleshed out, but that's difficult to do in such a short story and they're rounded enough to relate to them. I hope Bates will either write more short stories and publish and anthology or better yet: write a novel sized story, because I'd love to read more.

This was a neat short story. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect. The story was sweet and different. A little too short if you ask me, but over all a good story.

Review: By Niina at For The Love Of Reading

I loved this little story! It was only five pages long, but it managed to be eerie and raise questions and have a little romantic flair in it. I'm actually hoping Bates is going to write more on this as I have questions that need answering and I'd absolutely love to know more about both main characters.

Review: Journey With Books

Antique Charming is a short story that you can definitely finish in one seating. Iy wouldn't eat a lot of your time to read it. It has a little bit of everything, it has a little bit of romance, mystery and horror. It was a nice read but I wish the author made it a little longer to answer a few questions left. It has the making of a good fiction. The flow of words are just right and one would probably imagine hearing an ominous background music while reading it. I would definitely read it again if the author ever decides to write a sequel of this one! This is an awesome and prefect read for Halloween!
